On Wednesday, Oct 14, The Lawrence High Choral Department put on its Fall Concert. The theme of the concert was ‘I love, I cry, I sing, I dream’. Each ensemble, Sophomore Women’s, Men’s, Junior-Senior Women’s and A Capella Choirs, performed literature that fit into the evening’s theme.
The first group on stage was the Junior-Senior Women’s Choir, who sang ‘Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep’ which was accompanied by junior Ji Yeon Lee on the violin. The Junior-Senior women also sang ‘Jubilate Deo’, ‘Dance on My Heart’ and ‘Was Ever a Dream a Drum’.
Next up was the Men’s Choir who opened with a short and sweet piece titled ‘Dedication’ followed by ‘The Impossible Dream’ from Man of La Mancha, and ‘In Flanders Fields’. Then, Cathy Crispino, head choral director for Lawrence High, exited the stage while the men performed a choreographed version of the folk song ‘Cindy’ to resounding applause.
As the Men’s Choir stepped off of the risers, the Sophomore Women’s Choir filed in to take their places. They began with a beautiful and melodic piece titled ‘Answer to a Child’s Question’ which featured Lawrence High Alum JoAnn Doll on flute. They then progressed onto ‘Ici-bas!’, ‘Rain Come Down’ and ‘You Shall Have a Song’, the last of which also featured flautist JoAnn Doll.
As the Sophomore Women exited the stage, Senior Thomas Wheatley stood and invited the audience to join him in singing ‘Goodnight, Irene’. The melody swelled as the final choir for the evening took the stage, A Capella Choir.
A Capella commenced with a song called ‘Now Shout!’ which was a mixture of nearly every style of choral singing as well as spoken word. Next was ‘Still wie die Nacht’, ‘Sing Me To Heaven’, and ‘Alma Llanera’ which was the inspiration for the evening’s theme. ‘Alma Llanera’ featured Joyce Jordan, LHS accompanist, on harp, senior Lucas Parker on guitar and senior Evan Georgie on the maracas. Special guests Kelley Hunt and Caryn Mirriam-Goldberg composed the last piece specifically for A Capella Choir (To see more about this collaboration, read this article). Seniors Addison Frei, Lucas Parker and Evan Georgie were joined by junior Quenton Todd to accompany the choir on percussion and piano. Hunt and Miriam-Goldberg also performed a collaboration piece of their own that included audience participation. The next Lawrence High School choir concert is the Gala Concert coming later this fall.

I was actually surprised. Our young women choir was really small but we still managed to do a good job. Than again, when it came to getting up there, I got super nervous, and survived. =)
